This folding chess set has a 9.8 in (25 cm) magnetic board and a full set of 32 plastic pieces, plus two extra queens for pawn promotion. Each piece holds to the board with a magnet in its base, so a game can survive a bump on a train table or a picnic bench. When you are done, the board folds in half and the pieces store inside it.

What it does

  • Magnets in the piece bases keep the pieces in place on the board while you travel or move the game.
  • The board folds in half to about 9.8 in × 4.9 in (25 × 12.5 cm), closes with a buckle and holds the pieces inside.
  • 34 pieces in total: 16 black, 16 white and one extra queen per side for promotion.
  • Letters and numbers along the edges of the board mark the squares for notation.
  • The king stands about 2 in (5 cm) tall and the pawn about 1 in (2.5 cm).

A 9.8 in magnetic chess set that folds in half and carries its own pieces

The board is 9.8 in (25 cm) square when open and folds to a 9.8 × 4.9 in case with the 34 plastic pieces stored inside. A magnet in the base of each piece holds it on the board, so a game on a train table or a park bench survives a bump. Two extra queens are included for pawn promotion.

  • Pieces hold on the board

A magnet in each base keeps the pieces in place while the board moves or tilts.

  • Folds in half

The board closes on a hinge with a buckle and folds to about 9.8 × 4.9 in (25 × 12.5 cm).

  • Pieces store inside

Both sets travel in bags inside the closed board, so nothing rattles loose in a bag.

  • 32 pieces, 2 extra queens

32 pieces plus 2 extra queens; the king stands about 2 in (5 cm) tall on a 9.8 in board.

    Magnetic hold

The board can tilt and the pieces stay where you left them

Each piece has a magnet in its base. On a moving train or a car back seat the position stays intact; a hard knock can still shift a piece, so treat it as travel-tough, not spill-proof.

Compared with a board-and-box chess set

      Board-and-box set
Pieces hold on a tilted or bumped board
Board folds with the pieces stored inside
Two extra queens for pawn promotion
Full 32-piece set with notation marks on the board
    • 1. Open the buckle

Release the buckle on the edge, open the board flat and take the two bags of pieces out of the inside.

    • 2. Set up the pieces

Place the pieces on their starting squares; the letters and numbers on the board edge help you line them up. Keep the two extra queens beside the board.

    • 3. Play

Pieces lift off and set down like any other set; the magnets simply hold them where they stand.

    • 4. Pack up

Drop each side into its bag, lay the bags inside the board, fold it shut and close the buckle.

      • Board

        About 9.8 in × 9.8 in open (25 × 25 cm); about 9.8 in × 4.9 in folded (25 × 12.5 cm). Plastic, black frame, black-and-white squares with edge notation.

      • Pieces

32 plastic pieces (16 black, 16 white) plus 2 extra queens. King about 2 in (5 cm), pawn about 1 in (2.5 cm); magnets in the bases.

      • Weight and box

        About 1.5 lb (700 g) with packaging; shipping box about 11.8 × 7.9 × 3.9 in (30 × 20 × 10 cm).

      • In the box

1 folding magnetic board, 34 pieces in bags. No checkers or other game parts are included.

        Care and use
